Organization Tips

Staying organized can be difficult when you have multiple responsibilities. A busy life with tasks such as working, taking care of family members and managing a social life can get overwhelming. Organization is a key part of having a healthy life. Below is a list of tips to help simplify your life and keep you organized.

1-  Use a Calendar.

Keeping track of all your appointments, work schedule and family events on a calendar is a great way to add organization to your life. A great tip is to buy a dry erase calendar and keep it in a central location in your home. Instruct your family members to write any important dates on the calendar. This way, you can plan ahead!

2- Have a Family Meeting.

If you live with family members, a spouse or roommates, it is important to communicate with them to stay organized.  Having a meeting once a week to discuss important details such as chores, events or responsibilities that must be completed is a great way to eliminate some chaos in your life.

3- Make a Chore Chart.

Just like the old saying says, “Many hands make light work.”  Life is easier when you have people to help you. One way to simplify your life is to delegate responsibilities with your loved ones. Making a chore chart is a great way to make sure everyone knows what specific tasks they need to accomplish. In a busy household, it can be difficult for one person to share all the responsibilities such as laundry, cooking meals, grocery shopping, and cleaning. Giving each person in the household an assigned task will help the household run smoother.

4- Plan Your Meals.

Though it is convenient, eating fast food because you ran out of time isn’t good for your health. Scrambling to feed yourself or your family every night after work only adds to your frustration. Planning your meals ahead of time will not only help you eat healthier but will minimize stress. There are many resources for healthy recipes such as pinterest. You can even download free cookbooks on kindle or get free recipes online.  One day a week, take time to  plan your meals, create a shopping list and go to the grocery store. This way, you take the guess work out of what you are going to eat for an entire week!

5- Leave Reminders.

When you live a busy life, it can be easy to forget details. Leaving yourself or your family members post-it notes reminders is an easy way to stay organized. You can also utilize technology to help you with time management. Need to exercise? Set an alarm on your phone and label it “Time to exercise.”  Need to remind your husband to pickup your daughter from dance class? Leave him a post-it note in his car.  It can be easy to forget things and leaving reminders can help you get more organized.

6- Prepare your Clothes.

Mornings are stressful enough without having to go through your entire closet to find something that looks right! Picking out your outfits the night before can help you eliminate some morning stress. If you have a work uniform, you can make sure it is ironed and ready to wear the night before so you are not scrambling before you have to clock in. If you have children, it is a great exercise in helping them learn independence and organization by having them pick out their clothes for the week. This will help simplify mornings and make sure everyone in your household looks their best!

6- Set a Schedule.

Staying organized can be difficult when you don’t have a routine. Setting a schedule will help you eliminate stress and stick with your goals. Researchers claim it takes 21 days to create a habit. Sticking to a schedule of when you eat, sleep, exercise and attend social activities is important to live the best life possible.

7- Limit your screen time.

How much time do we waste scrolling through social media? We can be much more productive when we accomplish tasks instead of wasting time. Limiting our time on social media sites can provide us with extra time to spend with loved ones, complete housework, and do healthy activities such as exercise. So plug up your phone, leave it in another room and don’t let it distract you.

8- Prioritize.

As humans, we can do a lot but we can’t do everything. No human can complete everything all at once! This is why prioritizing in life is incredibly important. A great way to prioritize your life is to write down all your responsibilities, activities and goals on paper, then number them in order of importance.  This way you can make sure your most important tasks get completed first. It is also a good idea to see if there are any unnecessary tasks you can eliminate. Stretching yourself too thin can create chaos in your life. Making an itemized list by order of importance will help you gain control of your life and not get overwhelmed!

9- Designate Areas for Items.

If you are constantly looking for things, it is a good idea to delegate specific places to put things such as car keys, reading glasses and important other items.

Are you always looking for the TV remote when you get home from work when all you want to do is sit down and relax? Instead, you can delegate a special place for it such as purchasing a TV tray and making it a habit to always place it there when you’re done watching TV. When you put things in the same place consistently, you create habits and are less likely to lose them.

10- Clean Up.

A messy and unorganized space can add to the stress in your life. Make it a habit to be aware of your work area, home and car. A good habit is to straighten up these areas a little each day. Don’t let trash pile up. Don’t leave a ton of dishes in the sink. Don’t let laundry overflow in your hamper. Make conscious efforts to not let the mess accumulate. If you do a little each day, it won’t overwhelm you and you won’t have a massive mess to clean up at the end of the week!
