Natural Sunburn Remedies

Natural Sunburn Remedies

According to data from the CDC, 70% of people report experiencing sunburn. Over exposure to the sun can cause serious issues such as sun poisoning, skin damage and even dangerous cancers such as melanoma. This is why it is important to protect your skin and care for it properly.

Obviously, the first line treatment for sunburn is prevention.

Avoiding over-exposure to direct sunlight and wearing proper skin protection such as sunscreen should be the first steps you take to avoid sunburns. Avoiding sunlight during the hours where the UV rays are the most dangerous (such as midday-afternoon) is also beneficial. Staying in the shade and wearing appropriate clothing that shields your skin from damage will help you avoid sunburn.

People with fair skin should use extra caution in the sun and should use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

If you do end up with sunburn, there are many natural remedies to treat it.

1-  Aloe

Aloe gel is the liquid harvested from the aloe plant and is widely used as a natural remedy for sunburn, rashes and general skin care. Its naturally cooling effect makes it a perfect option to treat painful sunburns. Aloe gel also has properties that can treat bacteria and fungi.

2- Menthol

Menthol is made from various types of mint such as corn mint and peppermint. When mixed with a naturally calming base such as shea butter or cocoa butter, this blend will soothe even the harshest of sunburns.

3- Essential Oils

There are many essential oils that are beneficial in the treatment of sunburns such as: Lavender, Tea tree, Geranium, Chamomile and Eucalyptus.   To use these oils to treat sunburn, Apply 5-10 drops into 3oz of a carrier oil and apply a generous amount to sunburned areas, careful to avoid getting the oils into eyes, nose or mouth.

4- Cold Compress

One of the best natural remedies to soothe a sunburn is applying a cool cloth or ice compress to the affected area. Be sure to apply a fabric such as a washcloth or shirt in between your skin and the ice pack.

5- Baking Soda

As a natural PH balancer, baking soda can help restore balance to sunburned skin. To use this remedy to treat sunburn, create a paste with 1/4 cup of distilled, clean water mixed with 1/2 cup of baking soda and apply to affected areas. Allow mixture to set on skin for 15-30 minutes, then gently rinse.

While the sun is a wonderful part of summer it should be enjoyed in safe moderation with proper clothing, hydration and skin care!  We here at White Naturals wish you a safe and healthy summer!

Tips for Better Sleep

Tips for Better Sleep

Sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but sometimes it can be hard to fall asleep and get the recommended eight hours of rest.  Below is a list of great tips to help you get better sleep.

Set a Sleep Schedule-

Our bodies get used to routines and setting a sleep schedule will help stimulate our body’s natural circadian rhythm to function properly. Setting a set bed time where you lay down at the same time every night will help you create healthy sleep patterns.

Avoid Electronics an Hour before Bed-

How many nights do we stay up way too late because we were scrolling through social media on our phones? A helpful tip to get more rest is to plug your phone up on the other side of the room before bed and leave it there until morning. This will limit the temptation to spend unnecessary time on social media and promote relaxation.

Dim the Lights in the Evening-

Our bodies naturally respond to light stimulation, so by dimming the lights a few hours before bed you send a signal to your brain that sleep is coming. This teaches your body to wind down and can help you fall asleep easier.  Natural light sources such as Himalayan salt lamps can provide a natural glow that will not keep you awake.  Using these in the evenings instead of traditional incandescent bulbs promotes wellness.

Drink an Herbal Tea-

There are many natural teas that can assist you in relaxing before bedtime. Teas such as chamomile and lavender mixed with honey have been used for centuries to promote calmness after a rough day.  Drinking a warm tea before bed is a great way to help you relax.

(Disclaimer- Do not start any herbal remedy without first speaking to your doctor. This is not a suggestion for medical care.)

Take a Warm Bath-

Heat is a natural muscle relaxant. Taking a warm bath before bed can help ease you into a more relaxed state. You can also add comforting elements such as bath soaks, essential oils or epsom salt into your bath water for extra pampering.

Listen to Calming Music-

Enjoying instrumental piano music or listening to your favorite band before bed can help you de-stress and fall asleep faster. A good practice is to listen to calming music for at least 15 minutes as you lay down for bed. This can help you unwind and fall asleep easier. There are also audio options created for inducing sleep such as guided imagery, biblical meditation or binaural beats.

Create a Comforting Sleep Space-

Trying to fall asleep in a messy, chaotic space can inhibit your ability to rest. A helpful sleeping tip is to create a calming space that will allow you to drift into sleep easily.  You can do this by organizing your bedroom, having a comfortable mattress and pillow and also making sure your room is a nice, cool temperature.

At White Naturals, we are dedicated to making sure our clients can live their best life possible. We hope these tips help you find better, more restful sleep!
