Aromatherapy for Beginners

Aromatherapy for Beginners

There are hundreds of essential oil options, blends and remedies for just about every ailment. A holistic health practitioner or aromatherapist can help guide you to oils to improve your well-being. Essential oils used in aromatherapy can benefit your health in many ways! Below is a list of great aromatherapy options.

Using essential oils in a diffuser or wax burner is a great way to promote wellness and improve the air quality in your home, car or office. Diffused essential oils can be used to treat a wide variety of issues such as: reducing anxiety, creating focus or increasing libido just to name a few!  So, the first step to aromatherapy for health benefits is to purchase a quality essential oil diffuser.

There are multiple types of diffusers:  ultrasonic, nebulizing, heat and evaporative.

Ultrasonic diffusers work by emitting oil particles into the air when added to water.

Nebulizing diffusers are waterless yet they work by emitting particles of essential oils into the air.

Evaporative diffusers typically disperse the essential oils by using a fan mechanism.

Heat diffusers transfer essential oils into the air by using high temperatures.

Choosing the right diffuser for you is a personal choice depending on the types of oils you diffuse, for what benefit and also the environment you are diffusing in. For example, heat diffusers may not be the best choice if you live in a hot climate and struggle to keep the temperature in your home comfortable.

Once you have purchased a diffuser, it is also important to choose high quality, therapeutic grade oils. Discount and low-quality oils are typically filled with additives that can clog or harm your diffuser. Before you purchase any essential oils, be sure that it is a high-quality product that is pure.

There are many essential oil blends that can benefit your health.

Basic Aromatherapy Essential Oil Remedies

Eucalyptus, Spearmint and Peppermint are the top essential oils recommended to provide relief of allergies.

Lemon has antibacterial properties and when diffused, actually purifies the air. It is recommended for use in cold/flu season.

Lavender is indicated for relief of anxiety, depression and insomnia. When placed in a diffuser at bedtime or during times of stress it can induce a more relaxed state.

Jasmine and Ylang Ylang essential oils are noted for having a romantic effect and can naturally increase libido when diffused or applied topically.

Orange essential oil has been shown to have an energizing effect and can help promote alertness when diffused.

Natural Sunburn Remedies

Natural Sunburn Remedies

According to data from the CDC, 70% of people report experiencing sunburn. Over exposure to the sun can cause serious issues such as sun poisoning, skin damage and even dangerous cancers such as melanoma. This is why it is important to protect your skin and care for it properly.

Obviously, the first line treatment for sunburn is prevention.

Avoiding over-exposure to direct sunlight and wearing proper skin protection such as sunscreen should be the first steps you take to avoid sunburns. Avoiding sunlight during the hours where the UV rays are the most dangerous (such as midday-afternoon) is also beneficial. Staying in the shade and wearing appropriate clothing that shields your skin from damage will help you avoid sunburn.

People with fair skin should use extra caution in the sun and should use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

If you do end up with sunburn, there are many natural remedies to treat it.

1-  Aloe

Aloe gel is the liquid harvested from the aloe plant and is widely used as a natural remedy for sunburn, rashes and general skin care. Its naturally cooling effect makes it a perfect option to treat painful sunburns. Aloe gel also has properties that can treat bacteria and fungi.

2- Menthol

Menthol is made from various types of mint such as corn mint and peppermint. When mixed with a naturally calming base such as shea butter or cocoa butter, this blend will soothe even the harshest of sunburns.

3- Essential Oils

There are many essential oils that are beneficial in the treatment of sunburns such as: Lavender, Tea tree, Geranium, Chamomile and Eucalyptus.   To use these oils to treat sunburn, Apply 5-10 drops into 3oz of a carrier oil and apply a generous amount to sunburned areas, careful to avoid getting the oils into eyes, nose or mouth.

4- Cold Compress

One of the best natural remedies to soothe a sunburn is applying a cool cloth or ice compress to the affected area. Be sure to apply a fabric such as a washcloth or shirt in between your skin and the ice pack.

5- Baking Soda

As a natural PH balancer, baking soda can help restore balance to sunburned skin. To use this remedy to treat sunburn, create a paste with 1/4 cup of distilled, clean water mixed with 1/2 cup of baking soda and apply to affected areas. Allow mixture to set on skin for 15-30 minutes, then gently rinse.

While the sun is a wonderful part of summer it should be enjoyed in safe moderation with proper clothing, hydration and skin care!  We here at White Naturals wish you a safe and healthy summer!

Summer Skin Care Secrets

Summer Skin Care Secrets

Summer is a time for fun in the sun and enjoying warm temperatures outside! But summer activities such as exposure to excess sunlight and chemicals in pool water can damage your skin.

Below is a list of skin care secrets to help you keep beautiful looking skin no matter what the season!

Be Smart with Sun Exposure-

We all love to soak up the sun, but excessive sun exposure raises the risk of melanoma, a type of skin cancer. It is important to apply sunscreen and utilize shading devices such as hats, sun-visors and umbrellas when you will be in direct sunlight for long periods of time. The sun’s rays are the hottest during midday, so you might consider planning your outdoor activities for the late afternoon or evening.

Wear Summer Appropriate Clothing-

Certain fabrics such as flannel and polyester are not heat friendly and should be avoided during the summer time. When your body becomes overheated, you sweat and these fabrics do not allow your skin to “breathe.” This can cause a build up of bacteria on the skin and lead to break outs.  During summer, fabrics such as cotton should be worn. Cotton is a light, breathable fabric choice that will not harbor heat like polyester and flannel fabrics do.

Use Summer Specific Make-Up-

Certain cosmetic items do not withstand summer stressors and can end up making you look like a melted wax figure. It is important to choose makeup products that not only withstand things such as sweat and water exposure, but also offer healthy benefits to your skin. There are many options such as natural mineral powders that will give you flawless coverage while also nurturing your skin. You can also wear foundation that contains sunscreen for added protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays.

Establish a Daily Purifying Routine

Sunscreen, makeup and sweat can build up in your skin’s pores and cause you to break out and look older. It is important to establish a daily routine to cleanse your skin. Products such as our natural, organic exfoliating scrubs and cleansing charcoal facial mask are premium options that will help you keep your skin fresh and clean. For optimal, clear skin, always wash your face before bed and never go to sleep without washing off makeup or sunscreen.

Stay Hydrated-

Your skin contains 64% water, so without proper hydration, it will not look it’s best.  It is recommended that adults drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. Drinking appropriate amounts of water while you enjoy the summer heat will not only make your skin look better, but will also prevent harmful things such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Take a thermos or bottle of water with you as you enjoy summer activities and remember to stay hydrated!

Pick the Right Sunscreen-

Choose a sunscreen product with an SPF of at least 15 or higher. It is also important to choose a sunscreen with as little chemicals in it as possible. There are options for making your own DIY, natural sunscreen as well. Remember to apply sunscreen thoroughly to all sun exposed areas. Areas such as the ears, nose, face, arms and back typically are the most exposed, so be sure you are covering these areas with appropriate amounts of sunscreen. Re-apply as needed after water exposure and sweating.

Remembering these tips will help you achieve the great summer skin. Don’t forget to take care of your skin this summer!
